The following Technion academic units participate in this interdisciplinary program: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Materials Engineering and Bio-medical Engineering.
The science related to Nano metric systems and the resultant technology integrates knowledge from different areas. These are taught and researched in different Technion faculties. Over the past few years scientific research in the area has taken off and as a result, there have been technological breakthroughs in nanotechnology applications in many areas.
Medicine is already using Nano particles for diagnostic and treatment purposes. With the accumulating knowledge about the interdependency between biological and synthetic systems in the human body at Nano-metric levels, the expectations for future uses are high. Advanced technology applications use nanotechnology in a broad range of areas—from opto-electronic devices through to water treatment.
Technion has given research development and teaching of nanotechnology and Nanoscience the highest priority and is investing considerable resources in advancing these areas. To this end, the Russell Berrie Institution for Nanotechnology was established. Significant collaborative efforts are underway between researchers from different disciplines who are studying the range of scientific perspectives of the organization and functionalities of natural and synthetic systems at Nano metric levels, and the application of these principles in developing technology.
To promote these objectives, we have set up a concentrated nucleus of graduate level study and research courses, which are designed to integrate the knowledge in the different areas comprising Nanoscience, the natural sciences and engineering.
MSc Studies Admission Requirements
The program is aimed at students who have acquired a BSc in one of the following areas: Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Engineering, Bio-medical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Medicine, as well as other fields, as approved by the Admission Committee.
Admission to the program is based on applicants’ GPA average (a grade of at least 89 in previous studies, excepting special cases) and a personal interview with representatives from the Interdisciplinary Committee.
Students who hold a BSc from a university abroad, are required to pass the GRE exam and add its results to the registration kit.
Four-year bachelor program graduates, seeking an M.Sc. degree are required to study 25 graduate studies credit points comprising:
- 6 obligatory courses (see table).
- 2 recommended-choice courses (out of the list of courses by clusters ).
- 2 free choice courses
If the student presents a record of a past course(s) covering (a) certain core course(s), his/her eligibility for exemption of the relevant required core course(s) will be considered by his supervisor and the graduate program coordinator.
At any case, a minimum of 17 graduate credit points would be required for a M.Sc. Degree in the program.
Three-year bachelor program graduates seeking an M.Sc. degree, are required to take a minimum of 30 credit points comprising:
- 6 core-courses (see table ).
- 2 recommended choice courses (out of the list of courses by clusters ).
- 2 elective courses
If the student presents a record of a past course(s) covering a certain core course(s), his eligibility for exemption of the relevant required core course(s) will be considered by his supervisor and the graduate program coordinator. At any case, a minimum of 30 credit points, of which at least 20 are graduate credit points, would be required for a M.Sc. Degree in the program, for three-year bachelor program graduates. Language requirements are according to the graduate school regulations.
In addition to the courses, the student will perform a 20 credit-point thesis research.
The study program is designed to allow students to complete their graduate studies under the supervision of a faculty member of one of the faculties participating in the program, even if the student already holds a graduate degree from another faculty. The Interdisciplinary Committee responsible for the program encourages multi-disciplinary research and joint supervision by faculty members of different faculties.
The research subject must be approved by the Program Committee in line with the Graduate School’s regulations.
Students who hold an MSc degree from a recognized academic institution with the appropriate background and a GPA of at least 92 (courses and thesis). Students who hold an MSc from an international university are required to pass a GRE exam.
Students who are presently studying for an MSc and hold outstanding grades (GPA of at least 90) and have a high research record may apply to transfer into the direct doctoral track. In this track they would be required to accumulate a total of 35 graduate credit points (and not less than 27 credit points in case or exempts from obligatory courses.)
Applicants should include with the application form:
- Updated transcript of academic record
- 2 recommendations (recommendation form, and a letter from each of the two recommenders)
- A personal letter, explaining why you wish to be accepted into the program.
- A one-page abstract describing the proposed topic for the PhD research
Candidates will be interviewed by three faculty members active in the program who will be chosen by the chairman of the Graduate Studies Committee or the graduate studies coordinator.
Candidates are required to find a research supervisor, as a condition for being accepted.
The individual course program will be tailored based on the candidate’s background.
