Studies towards a Dual PhD<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

1. Objective<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In order to encourage collaboration and contact between students and researchers at Technion and students and researchers in universities in Israel and abroad, Technion will operate, together with these universities, programs for granting a dual PhD to students who have studied for such a degree (hereinafter: the \u201cStudent\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

This procedure provides the mutual principles and guidelines on the basis of which Technion will engage with other universities (that are certified to grant a PhD in the same field) in an agreement to grant a dual PhD (hereinafter: the \u201cAgreement to Grant a dual PhD\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

2. Responsibility<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Dean of the Graduate School of Technion will be responsible to manage the programs, adjust the programs to the guidelines below and the rules customary at the other universities, and for the admission of students.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3. Admission<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3.1<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Regarding students studying at Technion, Technion will be the \u201cparent university,\u201d and the other university will be the \u201chost university.\u201d Regarding students studying at another university, it will be the \u201cparent university\u201d and Technion will be the \u201chost university.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3.2<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The student must be admitted for PhD studies at both of the institutions based on the criteria required at each institution.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

3.3<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The confirmation of studies of a student studying towards a dual PhD will be signed by both institutions in the first year of the student\u2019s studies for the PhD degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

4. Advisors<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\n

At least two advisors will be appointed, at least one from each institution, for the student.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

5. Academic Requirements<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

5.1
\n<\/span>The academic program; courses and research, of each student requires the approval of both institutions.
\n<\/span>5.2
\n<\/span>The student will perform one research under joint supervision of the advisors.
\n<\/span>5.3
\n<\/span>The student must comply with all of the requirements for the receipt of the PhD in each of the two institutions.
\n<\/span>5.4
\n<\/span>As part of the academic requirements for the receipt of a dual PhD, the student will study at least one graduate course in each institution from all of the courses that the student must study.
\n<\/span>5.5
\n<\/span>Both of the educational institutions will mutually recognize the graduate courses taken by the student.
\n<\/span>5.6
\n<\/span>It is recommended that the student learn the language of the country of the \u201chost university.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

6. Duration of the studies<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

6.1<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The duration of the studies will be between three and five years.<\/span>
\nIn special cases, with the recommendation of the advisors, the Dean of Technion\u2019s Graduate School and the suitable entity of the other university may shorten or extend the duration of studies.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

6.2<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The student must stay and study for at least one year in each of the institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

7. Candidacy examination, and final examination<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One candidacy examination will be held in one of the two institutions, at the decision of the advisors and with the consent of the Dean of Technion\u2019s Graduate School and the suitable entity at the other university. The test will be held in English (or in Hebrew when appropriate).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

7.2<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

One final examination will be held in one of the two institutions, at the decision of the advisors and with the consent of the Dean of Technion\u2019s Graduate School and the suitable entity at the other university. The test will be held in English (or in Hebrew when appropriate).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

8. Short description of the research proposal and the Dissertation<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

8.1<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The short description of the research proposal (the basis for the candidacy exam), the final paper and any the other documents required during the studies will be written in English (or in Hebrew when appropriate).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The final paper will be submitted both to the Senate of Technion and the appropriate entity at the other university.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

9. Granting the degree<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

A student who completes all of the academic requirements for the receipt of a dual PhD and meets all the student\u2019s obligations towards both institutions will receive, in accordance with the Agreement for Granting a Dual PhD, a PhD from each of the institutions. The diploma will state that the research and the paper were performed in both institutions. Alternatively, the student will receive a PhD from the \u201cparent university\u201d and an accompanying document from the \u201chost university\u201d, all in accordance with the Agreement for Granting a dual PhD.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

10. Intellectual property<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The rights to the knowledge developed during the course of the research under the Dual PhD will be equally owned by the \u201cParent University\u201d and the \u201cHost University\u201d, unless otherwise agreed upon in advance by the \u201cParent University\u201d, the \u201cHost University\u201d, the advisors and the student. The research results may be published only upon the consent of the advisors and the student. Publication of the results must acknowledge the fact that the research was carried out as part of a Dual PhD Program at Technion Jacobs Graduate School and the other institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

11. Administrative Guidelines<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Dean of the Graduate School will adapt these rules from time to time so that they will adhere with the customary practice at the Technion and the other institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Scholarships (the selection between one of the two possibilities below will be made based on the Agreement for Granting a Dual PhD):<\/span>
\nA. A student will receive, based on the student\u2019s eligibility, scholarships and\/or aid from the \u201cparent university\u201d for the duration of the student\u2019s studies (including the student\u2019s stay in the \u201chost university\u201d), as customary in the \u201cparent university\u201d, Or<\/span>
\nB. A student will receive, based on the student\u2019s eligibility, scholarships and\/or aid from the \u201cparent university\u201d during the time in which the student is there, and scholarships and\/or aid from the \u201chost university\u201d while staying there, based on the customary practice in each place regarding PhD students.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

11.2<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Tuition will be paid to the \u201cparent company.\u201d The student will be exempt from paying tuition to the \u201chost university.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

11.3<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Travel expenses of the student will be paid by the student and\/or by the \u201cparent university\u201d and\/or by the \u201chost university\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The student will be responsible for arranging health insurance coverage for the duration of the student\u2019s stay at the \u201chost university.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
