Procedure for submitting a PhD thesis as a collection of papers \u2013 for students in the PhD Degree alone<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/header>\n

  1. In certain cases, and according to the approval and procedure detailed below, a thesis as a collection of papers can be submitted, In condition that at least three papers on the research topic have been published or accepted in a scientific journal, and the student must be listed as the first author in these papers (excluding cases where the order of authors is alphabetical) or where it is explicitly stated that the student is an equal partner.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Each department may stringent on these conditions or even prohibit the submission of a thesis in the format of a collection of papers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/h2>\n


    \nManner of Submitting the Request<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    The student will submit to the Graduate Studies Committee via the departmental secretary a request to submit a thesis that is a collection of papers that will include:<\/span><\/p>\n

    A.\u00a0 A list of papers that will be included in the thesis (title, names of authors, name of scientific journal and the like) while noting the stage they are in (accepted, published).<\/span><\/p>\n

    B.\u00a0\u00a0The position of each author in the institute\/ company he belongs to. A detailed description of the contribution of each author in each paper. For example: author A conducted the experiments described in pictures 1-3, author B performed those detailed in pictures 4 and 5, author C wrote the program and author D is the head of the law and wrote the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

    C. The student will attach a declaration that he undertakes that any publication derived from the PhD theses will maintain the copyrights of the additional authors of the papers and the stages in which the papers appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The departmental secretary will add to the request:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    D. A letter with the advisor\u2019s recommendation for the student\u2019s request\u00a0with explicit reference to the student\u2019s contribution to the papers, to the importance of the journals in which the papers were published in the field of research, and to the level of the student\u2019s scientific writing, compared to the level expected in his opinion from a student completing a PhD at the Technion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    E. The department approval for the thesis submission as a collection of papers.<\/span><\/p>\n

    If the request is approved by the Jacobs Graduate School, the request documents detailed above will be sent to the examiners of the thesis\u00a0 examination.<\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/h2>\n


    \nInstructions for thesis editing as a collection of papers \u2013 dependent on approval of the request<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The thesis will be submitted in accordance with the instructions for writing a thesis customary at that time as written in the Graduate school website, under Graduation, Editing the thesis<\/a>. The student will relate to the following topics:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Preamble<\/strong><\/span>
      \nThe preamble of the thesis will include an updated and expanded review of all of the research fields included in the thesis and will be at least five pages long.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Research methods<\/strong><\/span>
      \nAn additional chapter will describe the research methods, expansion beyond what is described in the summary of the papers is desirable. Special attention shall be granted to the research methods developed during the research.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Findings<\/strong><\/span>
      \nThe findings chapter shall be comprised of papers arranged in order according to the development of the research. The papers will be duplicated to uniform size and format and will be bound together.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Non-published material<\/strong><\/span>
      \nThere will be a section in the findings chapter devoted to unpublished articles. Each article will have a title, a detail page, an abstract, an introduction, results (include tables and charts in the appropriate places), discussions and illustrations.\u00a0 \u00a0 This section can also include additional, expanded and developed content that is not edited as an article.<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Discussion<\/strong><\/span>
      \nThe discussion chapter will include a short summary of the findings from the papers while properly referencing the illustrations presented therein. There will be reference to the entire research paper, while summarizing those sections that the discussion made use of in the papers. All of the innovations and their contribution to the field of research under discussion should be noted while noting the coherency and integration of the entire paper. The chapter will have a scope of at least five pages.<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Sources<\/strong><\/span>
      \nThe list of sources for the preamble and discussion and those that do not appear in the papers.<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. Language of the Thesis
      \n<\/strong><\/span>A thesis comprised of papers will be entirely written in English.
