    Guidelines for the Course of Studies in a Research Degree


    Vocational training insurance

    Each student in the study tracks with a thesis, must submit an online request for vocational training insurance via the portal>>Campus>> “My Requests”. The request must be submitted at the beginning of each semester.


    Completion of course “Research Ethics”

    Students studying for an MSc (with thesis) and PhD are bound by the “Code for Responsible Conduct of Research” and “Regulations for Conflict of Interest in Research” in the links below:

    The on-line course “Research Ethics” (218000) is a required course for all students studying towards graduate degrees who perform research at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. The learning materials, assignments, discussion groups, and final examination, are conducted from distance, via the course website. The course is based on a pass / fail grade. A passing grade will be given to students who complete the learning assignments according to the guidelines and pass the final examination.

    The course website can be accessed through the Technion’s Moodle system.

    The exam takes place once every month.

    Conditions for the submission of the research topic in Master’s degree studies

    • Normal GPA (at least a 75)
    • Completion of all of the requirements for status of an “full-time student”
    • Passing the exam in the “Research Ethics” course
    • The research topic will be submitted to the Jacobs Graduate School via the portal, along with the “Research proposal towards MSc studiesform, signed by the advisor.
    • A non-scholarship student will submit the research topic according to the faculty’s decision, but no later than half of their duration of study. A scholarship student will submit the research topic according to the faculty’s decision, but no later than 12 months from the commencement of their course of study.
    • Faculty-specific instructions may be received from the Department Secretary of each study program.


    Conditions for the submission of t
    he research proposal in PhD studies

    • Passing the exam in the “Research Ethics” course, except for a student who passed this exam as part of a previous degree at the Technion
    • The research proposal will be submitted to the Jacobs Graduate School via the portal, along with the “Research proposal towards PhD studies” form, signed by the advisor.
    • In doctoral studies, the research proposal will be used as the basis for the review of candidacy and will be submitted to the Examiner’s Committee by the advisor within 11 months from the commencement of the course of study, based on the following instructions:

    The name of the topic will appear in Hebrew and English

    Scope of the proposal: about 25 pages

    Content of the proposal:

    A review of the research background (including literature review)

    The objectives of the research 

    • The review of candidacy will take place within one month from the submission of the research proposal
    • Faculty-specific instructions may be received from the Department Secretary of each study program

     

    Change of research topic

    A student who wishes to change their research topic will submit written and reasoned request via email to the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Coordinator.

    If the new research is conducted under the guidance of another advisor, the request must be signed by the previous advisor for the waiver of the guidance.


    Change of the name of the research topic

    A student who wishes to change the name of the research topic alone, not on the date of submission of the thesis (In other words, they are not in the Graduation Process) will submit the “Changing the name of the research topic” form signed by the advisor, via email to the Graduate studies Coordinator in the academic unit, for the approval of the Vice Dean for Graduate Studies.

    A student who wishes to change the name of the research topic alone, and they are not in the Graduation Process, will submit the “Changing the name of the research topic” form signed by the advisor, along with the submission of the thesis via the portal >> Campus >> “My Thesis”. In this case, there is no need for the approval of the Vice Dean for Graduate Studies.

     

    Grade for research progress

    At the end of each semester, the advisor reports the degree of the student’s progress in the research. The grade appears in the record of grades, next to the semester average.

    Extension of the research topic/proposal submission Date

    A reasoned request for extension of the research topic /proposal submission date, signed by the advisor, must be submitted via Student Portal >>Campus>> “My Thesis”.
